The Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation which provides finance to selected academic institutions to enable them to fund postgraduate and post-doctoral research in both Arts and Sciences.

Maureen Amar and Richard Jenkins started the Trust with one scholarship at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2002 but now fund 27 awards at 15 centres of academic excellence.

They are fortunate to have grown up in an era of free tertiary education, plentiful job opportunities and affordable housing. Having reaped the benefits of such a benign economic climate they feel morally bound to reinvest their gains in the education of a new generation.

The Board of Trustees comprises Maureen and Richard and five other trustees. The Trustees select the academic institutions and areas of research but are not involved in the selection of graduate students or researchers.

At UCL’s Annual Scholarships and Bursaries Reception in 2016, Richard and Maureen made the following address:

Without science we would have no proper understanding of the forces which control our lives. Without the arts we would barely understand one another.

Bravura House

In 2017/18 the Trust purchased a somewhat neglected, five-bedroom, detached, Edwardian house which was subsequently converted into a seven ensuite-bedroom dwelling with a state-of-the-art, soundproof rehearsal studio in the rear garden.

The building was awarded the British Homes Awards prize for Best Community Living.

Britten's Phaedra - A film by Keith Warner

We had intended to simultaneously celebrate 20 years of the Trust’s existence and the opening of Bravura House. However the pandemic put an end to all of that. Instead, at the instigation of one of our National Opera Studio students, we embarked upon a lockdown project to make a film of an opera.

The production of the film gave much needed employment to many musicians and theatre professionals and proved to be far more memorable than canapés and champagne in the garden would have been.
